What to Expect When You're Not Expecting

Steve Rogers often just walked around base, looking like he knew what he was doing, but it was mostly just a way to sort through his thoughts when he was worried that Tony might walk in on him sketching. He swore that he'd never let that happen again.

So he marched. And marched. And marched. And only came to a stop when he spied a young woman looking positively lost. She was younger than anyone Steve had seen on base so far. Perhaps she was looking for her Dad, or Mom?

He straightened his uniform (got to look your best for the Outsiders), and walked over, offering her a small, friendly smile. "Can I help you, ma'am?"

This Wasn't Covered In Basic Training

It had felt as though Steve had been there all night long. His back was getting stiff, and his legs were beginning to ache from walking around and around and around the perimeter. But it was the job of Captain Rogers to protect the local citizens from any kind of danger, present or otherwise.

He sighed as he leaned against a wall, resting his infamous shield against his legs to free up both his hands so that he might pull off the mask and rub his face. Before he could get that far, however, a sound distracted him. In one fluid motion, Rogers had the shield back in his hands and he stood alert, ready to fight.

The sound wasn't like the cats which had startled him earlier in the evening. It was more of a heavy, raspy breathing. If only he could pin point where it was coming from, but it sounded as though it were all around him.

Maybe the warehouse just had really good acoustics, and it was just someone walking past.

"There is no point in hiding, I can hear you."

Still no reply, yet the sound was getting louder and louder, like the person was walking right up behind him...

Steve spun around to see an old, old woman with long, wild hair grinning. She was so close that he could see the veins in her eyes, and the little hairs on her chin. He shivered and jumped back. There was something odd about the woman, but he couldn't put his finger on it.

"Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to leave. This is a secured area for authorised personnel only," Captain Rogers told her in his most official tone. The woman didn't take any notice and merely grinned, gliding forward.

Yes. Definitely gliding.

"Ma'am, please," he tried a second time, reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder -

But his hand slipped right through as though she weren't there!
